Barrett’s esophagus – Everything you need to know

Barrett’s esophagus is a condition that happens when acid reflux damages the esophagus (a tube that connects the mouth to the stomach) the tube that has a flat pink lining thickens and becomes red. 

About 10 to 15 percent of people with acid reflux develop Barrett’s esophagus. meaning that This disease is more common for those who already have acid reflux issues but may develop it without a history of acid reflux. Moreover, it is associated with a very high risk of developing esophageal cancer, the risk may be low but it’s still very important to have check ups regularly that way if anything seems suspicious it can be treated on time.  

What increases the chances of developing this condition? 

Obesity- especially high levels of fat in the belly area, smoking also increases the chances of developing this issue. Some suggest that genetics or inherited genes play a role here as well. 

What may decrease the chances of developing Barrett’s esophagus?

Its been found that the frequent use of aspirin or other nonsteroidal drugs as well as  a diet that is high in fruits, vegetables can lower the chances of developing Barrett’s esophagus

Barrett’s esophagus symptoms

  • Heartburn 
  • Hard time swallowing food
  • Chest pain (less common)

 Interestingly, approximately half of those who are diagnosed with the condition have reported little to zero symptoms of acid reflux. This means it’s important for you to discuss any digestive health with your doc as to be sure you don’t suffer from it.

When to see a doctor for Barrett’s esophagus?

Any trouble you had\have with heartburn, acid reflux for over 5 years, you should ask your doc of the risks of Barrett’s esophagus.

Immediate help if any of these symptoms occur : 

  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Having chest pain
  • Having tarry, black or bloody stools
  • losing weight unintentionally 
  • vomiting blood that may look like coffee grounds
